Madame of the Heights
Published in Paperback by Windswept House (April, 1998)

A sensitive, compelling life story in a historical context..Kudos to the author of this book! It swept me off my feet and reminded me that women in history have always had to struggle for autonomy and independence at considerable cost. The danger in the struggle lies in allowing consuming greed to overule the intellect. For all her holdings, she died pathetically in a state of obvious paranoia; and without the emotional support of a real family. It was curiosity that drew me in and curiosity that remains. Do the names Jennie Bowen or Silas B. Bowen ring a bell? I own an antique needlepoint of George Washington with provenance (a note) that speaks of the relatives of Mme Jumel and I am trying to make a connection if there is one! My note(written in 1940) claims that Jennie Bowen (of Providence, R.I.) (the artist) was the daughter of George Washington Bowen and the grand-daughter of Mme Jumel. Help please, if you know! The book does not allude to children of his own. Is that because the author did not know or because there were none? If the latter is true, who was Jennie Bowen? (It states that the work was completed by her in 1857 in a convent).

Nature Diary of Mt. Desert Island
Published in Paperback by Windswept House Publications (January, 1993)

The Year in WildlifeThis is a perfect book for anyone interested in the wildlife of MDI. Mrs. Grierson has obviously spent a great deal of time observing the seasonal changes around her. Her love of her surroundings bubbles over into this little book. Monthly highlights and expected changes or arrivals are concisely written with just enough factual info. This book will encourage more walks in the Park or a closer look at the birds at the feeder. The drawings scattered throughout add to the comfortable feeling of this book.A must have for anyone who has ties to the nature of MDI.

Readings in Biblical Hebrew: An Intermediate Textbook (Yale Language)
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (November, 1993)
Average review score:

The Best Book of Its KindI teach classical Hebrew, in a four-semester program at the undergraduate level. So, I'm always looking for excellent teaching materials to help my students read and comprehend the beautiful and barbaric language of the ancient Biblical texts. There are plenty of introductory grammars, many of them very good. But there are not many textbooks available to help the second year reader.
It is this unreached audience that Ben Zvi,Hancock and Beinert target so well in this book. I'll hazard the guess that even if there were half a dozen or more such texts readily available, this one would still surpass them all in usefulness to the student.
As the sages and rabbis are wont to say, "baruch hashem."

Reminiscences of Winfield Scott Hancock
Published in CD-ROM by Digital Scanning, Inc. (01 June, 1998)
Average review score:

Entertaining and InformativeI was truly excited to find this book. Almira Hancock (wife of Gen. Hancock) wrote this book soon after the death of her husband at the request of many friends and admirers. She gives a wonderful account of her life with one of America's greatest soldiers as well as a valuable point of view of America in that time period. It is not the most complete biography ever written on Hancock though, the chapters on the Civil War and specific battles (Gettysburg for example) lack detail and attention. She actually spent more of her time concentrating on his post-war activities (Indian War, and Presidential election) as well as his pre Civil War service (other than the Mexican War, which is not even given). Information on the Mexican war or the General's formitive years are not given, because Mrs. Hancock begins the book at their marriage. Which is understandable concidering that shes wrote mostly on events at which she was present. One of the things I enjoyed the most was the letters. Mrs. Hancock added many correspondence letters, ones that the General wrote to her, those written to and from Gen. Sherman, etc. and at the back of the book, many letters that Mrs. Hancock received just after the death of Gen. Hancock, from USA Gen. Sherman, USA Gen. Sheridan, CSA Gen. Gordon, etc. Most of the information given is not available in any other source, Mrs. Hancock burned any records or letters that she did not include in this account. After reading many books on Hancock, I'd have to say that this has the most reference to his character and personality, if not through Almira's descriptions, by his own dialog. This is an enjoyable and informative first hand account of America in it's formative adolescence.

Great book for kids and clay artists alike! This book is great for kids as it is a nursury rhyme book and at the same time parents who want a fun book to read to their kids will enjoy it as well. This is also a great book for clay artists. Barbara Reid's technique is great for studing and applying on your own clay creations. She has another book specifically for clay design. It's called Playing with Plasterseen. Great projects for young kids and adults.
Check out her other books. They are all beautifully illustrated.

Strengthened by the Storm: The Coming of the Mormons to Harkers Island, N.C., 1897-1909
Published in Hardcover by Campbell & Campbell (December, 1988)
Average review score:

Spectacular and moving! This book provided a beautiful and heart wrenching story of the Latter-Day Saint's arrival to the coast of North Carolina. From the arrival of the first missionaries to the eventual burning of the chapel on Harkers Island, the author kept me interested the whole time. I could hardly force myself to put the book down! The best part is that it is a true story of real people who struggled for their religious rights, no matter what the cost. I highly recommend this book to Mormons and non-Mormons alike. It is truly a fine piece of literature.
